Hi, my husband had surgery for prostate cancer 4 years ago and was told his chances of recurrence were 1% but he has a very slowly rising PSA. Specialist says it will not kill him and he will probably die of a coronary before the cancer catches up!  But, he is such a healthy man - a very active farmer and a very calm natured man so that seems highly unlikely. He is taking several supplements recommended by a natural health therapist and I am interested to know if there are any men out there in the same position who are taking supplements that seem to be working. roger also takes pomegranate j. tomato j and is dairy free. any positive feedback would be so appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Maggie,

Hebal Pumpkin Formula, by Nature's Sunshine Products in Spanish Forks, Utah, is an excellent product for prostate maintenance.  I don't have a problem personally, but I take it on a regular basis.  The person that introduced me to this product did have prostate cancer, and he actually got rid of it over 25 years ago just with this product alone.  I am not necessarily  advocating that the company claims this product cures prostate cancer; nevertheless my friend was able to overcome it with it, without surgery, chemo or any traditional treatment.  You can either call the company direct and pay the retail price, or you may order it at a reduced price through www.betterherbs.com  I hope this helps.

John

Why not take LEF's Ultra Prostate and Pomegranate extracts. Also a chat to an LEF advisor maybe useful.

Dr Stephen Strum, who is on LEF's board, is a prostate cancer oncologist. He participates in a free email list for people with prostate cancer and prostate problems. You can submit questions to the list and receive a very detailed answer very quickly, usually written just for you by Dr Strum. Search for P2P Patient to Physician for instructions on how to join the list and submit a question.

I am also using pomegranate extract for prevention. E.g. see:

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer(aggressive) in 1995. I was given 5 years after having radiation treatment. I decided I would look after myself. 15 years later I am still here and my last CT scan shows nothing and my whole body bone scan  shows no metastises. How did I do it. Well I owe everything to Life Extension. I started taking Modified Citrus Pectin, Curcumin, megagreen tea and Boron. I take twice the amount of MCP recommended and you must be very disciplined. I walk 6km every night of the year whether it is raining , cold or 35c. I also go on my gym 3 nights a week. I am very fit. Just this week I have been talking to urologists in Perth Australia and Frankfurt Germany and they are both staggered that I have supressed my cancer for so long seeing as how it was aggressive. I am 74 in December and I expect to live past 80. What I have achieved can be achieved by anyone as long as you are disciplined and take the LEF products shown above.my email is theleek@iinet.net.au

Janet,

Supplements are all well and good, but the facts of the matter are as follows; 5-alpha reductase must be suppressed in order for the prostate to thrive. Many people can chatter on and on about "natural extracts" and so forth, but dutasteride and finasteride are KEY in the battle against 5-ar and they both work differently so if taken together they can suppress it entirely.

Finasteride is marketed as Proscar and Propecia, Dutasteride is marketed as Avodart. Always go for the generic version of Proscar as it is 5 mg and all versions of Propecia are 1 mg yet the cost five times as much!!

Research the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and the drugs I've just written about and you'll see how the supplement market promises so much yet delivers so little.  Be healthy and may your loved ones thrive!

The pharmaceuticals you mention are effective.  Many supplements, such as saw palmetto, pygeum Africanum and nettle, also inhibit 5-alpha-reductase 2.

The common denominator in supplements such as saw palmetto and nettle is beta sitosterol. I’ve been using it for years adding it to margarine etc. to keep cholesterol levels in check but when taken on an empty stomach, at least an hour before or after eating it works wonders for the prostate.

For someone who‘s had cancer a doctor would probably recommend drugs such as finasteride however personally I’d rather start out with something a little less stronger to see if it helps first.

Beta sitosterol has similar action anyway; it blocks 5-alpha reductase and a male will get the same side effects as finasteride if he takes a lot of it. I wouldn’t bother with capsules, I’ve found them to be useless and a waste of money. Instead go with phytosterols extract powder that you can purchase at a health food store or online. A quarter to a half teaspoon a day is plenty.
