This is my first time on this website.  I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, with a goiter at age 13, 30 years ago.  They tried to shrink the goiter for a year.  Didn't work.  I was on heart meds and other meds, I no longer remember all of them.  At age 15 they took the goiter out along with most of my thyroids.  I never had to take any meds--what part of the thyriod that was left was enough for me.  I was always slim, never over 112 pounds.  At age 30 my levels started running low so they put me on Synthroid, start out on .025 and now I am up to .150.  I still stayed slim until I was 35 then I gained 30 pounds in less than 12 months.  Doctors had no answers other than at my age I should expect to gain.  I stay around 140.  I am 5'6" so my family thinks I look healthier.  Back in October of this year my cholestrol was up to 268 out of the blue. My thyriod was fine. My doctor said I had to get it down or I would need to go on meds for it.  Family history(mother's side).  I was supposed to try to get it down by March.  Let's just say I had a lot going on during that time and didn't really try.  But when I went to get my thyroid medicine filled they changed me to the generic brand Levothyroxine.  I had alway taken synthroid.  But I took it anyway.  I went to the doctor for my lab results in March and to my surprise and my doctors, my cholestrol had come down 73 points to 195.  He wanted to know how I had done that he knew it was [not]diet because I had not lost any weight.  The only thing I could think of was I had started drinking a small glass of red wine to help me sleep at night.  He said that a lot of people claim that it works.  I have since thought all of this over and was wondering, could it have been the change of my thyroid medicine?  Has anyone been on the generic and had any changes in lab work?  Just curious.

You may want to take your body temperatures and see if you are over 98.4. If not then the testing for your thyroid is probably not accurate (blood tests do NOT tell all) and you may need a different type of medication. Ask your DR about a more natural one such as Armour or NatureThyroid. You may also not be converting all the T4 to T3 (or is it vice vers?). A little bit of Cytomel or one of its peers may be needed.

My guess is that the glass of wine is what did the cholesterol lowering although your body may have been used to the other thyroid med and "woke up" with a different formulation. If you are now in your early 40s then you may need all the hormones checked. I'd guess that you need a bit of DHEA and perhaps some progesterone. You want to really watch it now before you go into menopause as then the bone starts to lose density rather rapidly.

Eat healthy and exercise and forget about dieting. I gave up dieting over four years ago and have lost weight very steadily at about 1/2 to 1 lb a month...yes that is over 50 lbs now. Lots more lard but am not going to worry about it. I aim to be healthy and refuse to diet.....I do have an email on my experiences, if you want a cy let me know.

just a note... if you change your thyroid meds to Amour (the natural kind) be careful i changed mine from synthroid (similar to yours) to Amour and i got heart palpitations.  I guess some people can handle it and others can't and also i read that after taking synthroid and then trying to switch to armour the synthroid is still in your system for a while and you should start out with a much lower does of Armour ... do some checking on the net or someplace before making a decision.

When coming off of any Pharm Drug, you should taper off slowly. First week, take every other day. Second week, every two days, etc. Also if you had a goiter, did you have your iodine levels tested? Go to www.drbrownstein.com  and pick up a copy of Iodine-Why You Need It & Why You Can't Live Without It. The product (Iodoral) that he talks about works great. Dr. Sherry Rogers, M.D. in her newsletter Total Wellness recommends this also. Long Life & Happiness
