Last fall I was trying male HRT, and while my free testosterone, testosterone, and DHEA levels all improved, progesterone levels shot through the roof, to 2.2 ng/ml, where the reference range is 0.3-1.2 ng/ml.

I stopped taking pregnenolone when I saw the progesterone reading. Recently, I was reading up on progesterone, and found that is is used to chemically castrate sex offenders, killing sex drive - and given my experience, I believe it. Further, while it's straightforward to see that supplementing with pregnenolone could lead to increased progesterone, I've read that supplemental DHEA can as well.

I'm writing because I haven't seen this issue addressed at LEF in the context of DHEA and pregnenolone supplementation.

The Male Hormone Retest profile does not include progesterone. Shouldn't we be concerned about increasing levels of a hormone used to chemically castrate men? I'd like to see more information on the effects of progesterone in men and safe/desired ranges for blood levels.

Pregnenalone is used to backfill other hormones that are not being procduced due to shutdown from HRT, such as progesterone and DHEA. The question is how much pregnenalone was he taking?

Anything ove 25 mg a day was probably way too much.

I had been taking 50 mg of pregnenolone, 50 mg of dhea, and 5 mg androgel during the tests results on the left, and 25 mg DHEA and 5 mg androgel on the right.

Pregnenolone 20-150 ng/dl 68 55
Progesterone 0.3-1.2 ng/ml 2.2 0.6
DHEA 95-530 ug/dl 466 160
FT 6.8-21.5 pg/ml 14.8 7.4
TT 241-847 ng/dl 677 370
Estradiol 0-53 pg/ml 24 30

The progesterone results were disturbing so I dropped the pregnenolone.

Someone suggested that anything over 25 mg is too much pregnenolone. Maybe so. But it seemed strange to get such a jump in progesterone while the pregnenolone result only marginally increased, and was even still on the low side.
