I was diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus in April, 2008. It appears that this precancerous condition is a lot more common then one would think. It can lead to cancer of the esophagus in a small percentage of cases but cancer of the esophagus is the fastest growing form of cancer at the present time.

If you are bothered with gastric reflux (heartburn), don't take it lightly. You should go to your gastroenterologist and have an upper endoscopy to make sure you do not have Barrett's esophagus. Cancer of the esophagus is deadly and can spread rapidly.

All the best,

Sorry you have to deal with this

I notice this also shows up among the gulf war vets

who are like the civilians with autoimmune issues such as CFIDS, CFS, FM.

I suspect exposure to an organic solvent, pesticide:  BUTYL or 2-butoxyethanol for many if not most autoimmune issues.

Do you recall a serious flu?

I was not aware of Barrett's Esophagus showing up among Gulf War vets. The cause of BE is usually said to be frequent exposure of the lower esophagus to acid reflux.

It is quite possible that exposure to toxic substances could trigger a response that would result in BE.

I have heard Joyce Riley discuss Gulf War Syndrome several times on the radio program coast-to-coast AM.

I don't recall any serious flu...I haven't had the flu for at least ten years.
