You must love this one …. It is amazing to see how advises can be biased in this area:

“The Cons of Zone Diet :

Complicated and scientific; the 40/30/30 macronutrient ratio represents the “mid point” to the entranceway of the mysterious place of which Sears speaks—this can be tricky.”

• The first time I see being “scientific” is something negative

“The daily caloric intake for this diet is determined by your protein requirements - which can lead to incredibly low daily caloric intake –much too low and sometime very hard to stay on!”

• Not really, we should eat the protein our body require and we should try some CR for longevity, right?

“Claiming the 40/30/30 zone ratio creates a positive eicosanoid balance isn't a bad theory - but it's a largely unproven one.”

• Might be unproven (not sure at all), but there is lot of evidence by renowned institutions …

“Eliminates some essential vitamins and minerals found in certain food. “

• Never heard Dr. Sears elimination of foods, even red yolk is good even if rich in AA if you have enough EPA

“Expensive to follow. “

• Not really, what they really mean?

“Time consuming and inconvenient.”

• Maybe calculating the Blocks etc … but the basic principles look very easy to apply

about that Zone is too scientific in daily life (counting macronutrients.., it means too scientific in this way I think), similar opinions Dr Andrew Weil has:

The ZONE: On the plus side, The ZONE encourages people to exercise, drink lots of water, and limit carbohydrates while balancing proteins and fat. It distinguishes between good and bad fats and better and worse carbohydrates. However, I do not like its suggestion that food should be regarded as a drug to manipulate your hormones and metabolism - that is not a healthy attitude toward food and eating. Overall, however, the ZONE is one of the better diets out there for healthy weight loss.

Years ago I knew Dr Weil in Spain when he presented his Healthy Aging book in Spanish, he told me Zone Diet was a so good diet when I asked him about it.

LEF has launched an improved fish oil with more polyphenols, and also a enteric coated version.

new LEF fish oil

I see that the new product 01482 seems to be the same as the old 00982 except for the 'olive fruit extract/polyphenols part.

Does DDye or anybody else have a feel on how much the new olive fruit extract "improves" the F.O. compared to the old 00982?  Dr Sears fish oil also has sesame lignans but no olive fruit/polyphenol addition???  All of them are 60% EPA+DHA (weapons grade). Anybody compared high dose 00982 with Dr Sears F.O. w/out the olive fruit?  LEF 5%, 50%?? more effective?? I am sure Bill Faloon has an idea?

00982 and Irvingia have done miracles on me and a few friends!

Life Extension's Product Development department is continually working to formulate new products and improve existing ones.  Olives and olive oil have been the subject of a number of positive studies.

This is the omega-3 product used by me http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Supplements/Item17118/DHA-Neuromins.html  made from algae.

Polyphenols are one of the keys of any antiinflamatory diet like Zone Diet.

For me LEF Super Omega-3 is the best fish oil, even better than Dr Sears' fish oil due to its polyphenols. Olive oil polyphenols are among the most powerful antioxidants, maybe specially hydroxytyrosol. Its one of main reasons to take extra virgin olive oil in your meals.

If one is not vegetarian is better taking an EPA DHA fish product than a DHA alone (but DHA can be converted to EPA by body).

The only thing I miss from LEF is a Super Omega-3 liquid, people with cancer HIV Alzheimer's, Parkinson.. need to take too Omega-3 grams daily to use capsules form.

I agree that LEF 00982 (and now 01482) Fish oils are the world's best.  Thanks LEF!

SpainEurope:

Didn't Dr Sears say in one of his books (Toxic Fat?) that almost all ingested EPA converts to DHA in the body after 4-5 hours? The EPA component does the appetite suppression?

Noticed there are a few British brands (PuraEPA, Vegepa?) which seem to be 90-100% EPA.. some with GLA added by borage or primrose oil.  Primrose is much lower GLA than borage which is usually 24% GLA.  None of these have sesame lignans, nor olive polyphenols like LEF.  They are also at least 4X-5X more expensive than LEF as well.

What would seem to be the "ultimate" omega-3 supplement would be 90% EPA 10% GLA (distilled out from borage oil to get rid of the omega 6s), then put in the same olive extract and sesame lignans that LEF 01482 has in it??

Dr. Sears has a patent on it.. Expires in a couple of years I think. He seems to think ideal EPA:GLA ratio is 10:1  (8:1 to 15:1)?  He hemmed and hawwed in "Toxic Fat" and mentioned a ratio of 4:1 (EPA:GLA) and that was too much GLA.

His claims seem to cover 2:1 to 8:1 EPA:GLA

my $.02

- I have never read EPA conversion to DHA, maybe its possible, i am only sure that DHA can be converted to EPA, and linolenic acid can't do it very well.

- I dont think a pure EPA product is the best. Everybody needs DHA to his brain and EPA to control inflammation. Where is the ideal EPA/DHA ratio? Probably nobody knows, but you need a sensible balance among these two.

- GLA. As Barry Sears says most people only need a very small GLA amount you can obtain from oat flakes. Many people would ten to activate inflammatory pathway with a daily GLA supplement in the long-term. There is not an universal ideal EPA/GLA ratio, at this point every people is different as was Sears experience back in late 80s with athletes. Even a person can change his needs of GLA with time. Personally I consume only a GLA softgel per week, I can only say that its sure athletes tend to need a higuer GLA amount than other people. The best approach in general for everybody (as I believe) is a small GLA amount only if you are taking much bigger EPA amount.

Search page 118 of TOXIC FAT book for a reference of this topic.

This month is being published TOXIC FAT for Spaniard public (Spanish of Spain). GRASA TOXICA is the spanish title.

SpainEurope,

What ghg is doing on GLA:

ghg is taking 15 Life Extension Fish oils per day (product 00982), each pill contains 350 mg of EPA (DHA amount does not affect this issue), giving a total EPA intake of 5250 mg of EPA per day. For a 10:1 ratio, this equates to 525 mg of GLA per day.
So this means for 15 LEF fish oils/day, that two 1000 mg borage oil pills day, gives you 480 mg of GLA...(Good borage oil is 24% GLA).

So far (couple of months), noticed extra boost from GLA, and no "spillover".

Did Dr Sears ever get his 'pin prick' EPA/AA blood test kit out yet?  The one with just a drop of blood onto a card and then mail in? Can't find much on the web on it. There is an 800 number around page 241 in 'toxic fat' book, but I haven't called it yet...

Hi ghg, it seems fine your strategy EPA/DHA with GLA in these amounts.

Dr Barry Sears does not offer directly blood tests, he simply gives information regarding laboratories which offer this AA/EPA test in plasmatic phospholipids.

I cant find on website but I think I have read in ant place LEF does this test. If not, LEF should do. Its the most important inflammation test by far.
